Jesus, the Great and Mighty God

Bible Text: 1 Samuel 5

The Philistines had captured the Ark of God. The Ark represented the presence of God (Numbers 10:35). This was where the sacred objects such as the covenant tablets were kept.

                      

The Philistines placed the Ark of God in the temple of Dagon. They had defeated Israel and captured the Ark Of God.                       

As if that was not enough, they desecrated the ark of God by placing it in the temple of their god, Dagon. God who is Almighty and all powerful showed to those in Ashdod that He alone is God. I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me (Isaiah 45:5)

                     

The following morning Dagon had fallen face down before the ark of the covenant. This happened again the next morning after they had placed Dagon back up. But this time around Dagon's head and hands had been broken off. They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold (1 Samuel 5:3-4)                   

It was after these happening that those in Ashdod were afraid to keep the ark of God on their town. God is a Mighty God and He alone should be honoured. When we fail to honour God by desecrating Him through our way of life, we like those in Ashdod will feel the heavy hands of God. Aside from Dagon's demise, the Lord brought upon the people tumours for desecrating the Ark of God.  The Lord’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumors. (1 Samuel 5:6)

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I commit my life in your hands. You are the Great and Mighty God. Help me to honour you with my life. 

And unto Him who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we could ever ask or think, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.
