The Fear of the Lord

Bible Text: Proverbs 1:7

You fear the law system in place so you will be careful not to err any laws. You fear getting hit by a car so when crossing a busy road you will look left, right and left again. Fear in these scenarios helps to keep us alive.

The fear of the Lord is far more beneficial than these fears we have about our wellbeing. The fear of the Lord is more than reverence to the Most High God but the fear of God is a way of reciprocating the great love he has for us. "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

We fear God by keeping his commandments. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man (Ecclesiastes 12:13)

When we fear God , we gain wisdom and this wisdom sets us apart from all others. Shadrach, Messach and Abednego feared God and refused to bow down to the golden image made by King Nebuchadnezzar, this act took them to the fiery furnace but deliverance gained them a promotion (Daniel 3).  Joseph out of fear of the Lord refused to defile himself by accepting the request of Potiphar's wife, this led him to life in prison but by Divine intervention his fear of God gained him a position as the one in charge of the whole of Egypt. (Genesis 41:41-46)

It may seem foolish to fear God now because the world offers us so many other alternatives, but the good news is, it pays to fear God. We are spared of death as is the fate of those who do not fear God. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death. (Proverbs 14:27)When we fear God we are set apart to do the good works that he has assigned for us to do. We walk in his will and live an abundant life.

Do not let your heart envy sinners,
but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.

There is surely a future hope for you,

and your hope will not be cut off.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I commit my life in your hands. Help me to fear you, that i may gain wisdom and do your will.

And unto Him who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we could ever ask or think, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.

Amen!
