Retrospection is a good thing. To make a mental review on
past things often reveals lessons that we ought to learn. It only becomes bad when we do not want to
let go of what God has made clear that what we lost or where we left behind was
not for us.
The angels warned Lot that God was going to destroy Sodom
and Gomorrah. The instruction was clear “Do not Look back”. “As soon as they had brought them out, one of
them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in
the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!” (Genesis 19:17)
Lot’s wife however looked back. The reason why she looked
back is no different from what happens to us.
We are to flee from sin without looking back. Joseph fled
from sin to the extent that he left his cloak behind. This should be our
Usain-bolt-like energy when fleeing from sin. Do not look back!
Looking back and continuing in the very sins we left behind
to follow Jesus is likened to a dog returning to its own vomit. “It would have
been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have
known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on
to them. Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A
sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.” (2 Peter 2:21-22)
Like Lot’s wife, looking back to things God does not want
for us brings only destruction. “But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a
pillar of salt” (Genesis 19:26)
In our Christian walk, let us learn to flee from things that
are not good for us and the sins that draw us away from our God. Do not look back!
I won't go back,
can't go back, to the way it used to be
Before your presence;
came and changed me
I won't go back, I
can't go back, to the way it used to be
Before your presence
came and changed me
(I Won’t go back –
William McDowell)
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I commit my life in your hands. I thank you
for saving me from the chords of sin. Give me the strength each day to flee
from sin and rather draw close to you.
And unto Him who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly,
above all that we could ever ask or think, to him be glory in the church and in
Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.
Amen!
