More Blessed to Give

Bible Text: 1 Kings 17:7-16

It is more blessed to give than to receive. Quite an irony but these are the words of Jesus. It may seem that the giver is losing something and the receiver is gaining the gifted item but here lies the case where Jesus says the giver is more blessed.

The woman at Zarephath had to use her last supplies, a handful of flour and a little olive oil, to serve Elijah. Even in her situation she was commanded to give.

When we give we do not only obey God's command to give but we trust in God's provision. It is God who gave what we have and when we give to meet a need we will never lack as our Provider, God, will never run out of supplies to keep providing for us.  For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’ (1 Kings 17:14)

When our hands are always open to give those same hands will be open for God's abundant blessings.
Whether it is our money, time, love we give generously and from our hearts, without expecting anything in return, God will surely bless us.

The woman at Zarephath was blessed with an unlimited supply of flour and oil. Her little flour and oil, if she had refused to give it out to Elijah, will not have seen her through the famine. Her act of giving her last in obedience to the word of God, made room for God's blessings upon her life. God, the Great Provider, provided for she and her son.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I commit my life in your hands. Let my heart and hands be open to give.

And unto Him who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we could ever ask or think, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.

Amen!
